Inside the Fremantle Shipwrights workshop with boats under restoration

Before and after

Our work

This is the part that matters. Every boat below came into the Fremantle Sailing Club shed needing real work and left finished. Each one shows the before and the after, with the job in Stephen's words.

Fit-out & refit

Maria, formerly Scouts Honour

Before The boat Scouts Honour before the fit-out, tired saloon and galley
After Maria after the fit-out, new lounge, galley and cork deck completed in the shed

The brief. Helen and Jeff wanted the inside of the boat to flow out to the deck and back again, and a new name to match the new boat.

The work. We stripped the saloon and reclaimed half the downstairs second bathroom to fit a washing machine and extend the galley above it. New lounge and seating brought the cook into the conversation. We laid a cork deck out the back for a softer feel and extended the flybridge hardtop for shade. The whole fit-out was designed and built on site in our shed. Last of all, we changed the name to Maria.

Thank you all so much for realising my dream for the transformation so magnificently. The washing machine was the standout addition for me, and the quality of the fit-out made us very proud to be entertaining on such a beautiful boat.

Insurance repair

Caribbean 40, back from a flooding

Before The Caribbean 40 stripped out after flood damage, ruined fit-out removed
After The Caribbean 40 repaired with a new moulded fibreglass front and overhauled engines

The job. Two rogue waves came over the bow leaving Rottnest Bay and went through the front windscreen, flooding the fit-out, engine room and electrics. The fallen glass wrecked the interior.

The work. Straight in for the insurance repair. We removed the ruined fit-out, carpets, engines and electrics. The engines got a complete overhaul and a dyno tune, good as new. We replaced the shattered glass screen with a durable moulded fibreglass front, just in case it happens again.

Precision 17 Vivo, fire restoration

Before Precision 17 Vivo sandblasted back to fibreglass after fire damage
After Precision 17 Vivo restored, refinished and back on the water with a new canopy

The job. Damaged in a fire at the Fremantle Sailing Club.

The work. We sandblasted the hull and cabin back to fibreglass, repaired the delamination between foam and fibreglass, then laid two layers of fibreglass mat with Vinylester resin for water resistance. Three coats of Awlgrip high-build primer, then filling and fairing with a two-man board. We rebuilt the interior and flybridge with new seating and electrics, designed and installed a social table and a new swim board, and added a new fibreglass canopy for permanent shade. Back on the water and looking new.
